Get yourself a Plumbing professional !

You might have heard a banging, knocking, or whining noise coming from the walls of your house. They appear to be more audible at night, but before going to an exorcist, you might want to look for an express plumbing service!

The sounds are surely very disturbing, but it could be a bit of a relief to know what is causing that noise. Those mystery noises are not ghosts, it is your plumbing!

Banging Pipes

Now the typical plumbing system pushes water at a rate of 45-80 pounds per square inch. That pressure created in the pipelines causes them to vibrate, sometimes at a greater frequency causing a banging noise. This occurs because these water pipelines are connected to the structure of the house through metal straps, and over time, the pressure built by the water causes them to shake enough to be let loose from those straps and begin striking on the structure. In addition, this noise could also be an indication of an obstruction blocking water flow in the pipes. Left unattended, this situation could have serious repercussions for the whole plumbing system.

Shock Absorbers

If the knocking noises appear when you turn off a water supply, for example when you’re washing machine is filled or when a toilet is flushed, this indicates a water hammer. A water hammer occurs after a valve closes, and the water needs someplace to go, causing a spike in the water pressure. Water always finds a way, and when it is stopped, it creates a moving pattern which collides with the pipes or valve causing those noises you hear. Replacing or installing a water hammer arrestor should easily solve this issue.

Water Pressure

If whining noises occur as the water is running, this can indicate an issue with your water pressure. A water pressure gauge can be used to check if the pressure is too high. If this is the cause of your mystery noises, we recommend scheduling an appointment with one of our technicians as your pressure-reducing valve may need to be adjusted or replaced. Lack of a working pressure-reducing valve can lead to sewage backup, pipe bursts, or worse so it is critical that you call a professional as soon as possible.

Other Noises

For instance, the screeching sound coming from the faucet when its opened is likely caused by some material let loose from the fixture. This could be easily fixed by shutting off the water supply for a while and replacing the faucet. If you notice a gurgling sound coming from your drains or toilet, this usually indicates a clogged drain, but could also be a problem with the sewer line. This should be handled with care to prevent the pipes from being damaged.
